Lehigh Valley Kayak and Canoe Club
Instruction and Education Committee
Scott Douglas Committee Chairman
The following is a report on the efforts of the Instruction and Education Committee for the 2017 fiscal year (Nov 16 – Nov 17).
Pool Classes – January 8 – April 2. The Quakertown YMCA was rented for the purpose of providing indoor paddling practice for general membership. Instruction was provided ad hoc on rolling and stroke technique by various members during open pool time. 99 adults and 27 children took advantage of the pool at least one time. Formal instruction was provided in weeks 1 and 2 for canoeing, weeks 3-5 for recreational kayaking, and weeks 6-13 for moving water kayaking. Twenty two people attended at least one class. While these classes are not ACA skills classes, they are based on the skills required for beginners once they get out on the water. At this time there are continuing classes on water for whitewater and recreation.
Canoeing. Instructors Greg Wojcik and Joanna Heid-Meeker. One member took the class. It was noted that the pool is not conducive to effective long canoe instruction. We are not recommending that a canoe pool class be offered in 2018.
Recreation. Instructors Dan Rempp and Linda Martin (with helpers). 7 members took the class.
Moving Water. Instructor Scott Douglas (with helpers). 17 members took the class.
Beginners Series. Instructor Eric Schweitzer (with helpers). April 23 – June 16. This is a continuation of the pool sessions, typically limited to those people plus safety boaters. 10-12 members participated in one or more classes on the Little Lehigh and Lehigh. Additional Lehigh River trips were conducted after the end of the series, with many of the students participating.
Guide Class. Instructor Scott Douglas. May 6. This one day class was designed to teach paddlers how to organize and lead a river trip. 9 members participated. This was the third year for this class.
Intermediate Series. Instructor Scott Douglas (with helpers). March 18, May 29, Aug 27 and Nov 5. Four one-day intermediate skills classes were offered, on Tohickon (2), Mongaup and Lehigh rivers. 26 members participated. There were also a lot of guided first timers trips down various rivers this summer; Stoney Creek (May 20), Savage River (June 3), Cheat River (June 4), the Lower Yough (Sept 16), and the Tohickon (Nov 4). While these were not formal classes, they certainly did result in a lot of learning.
Swiftwater Rescue. Instructor Wayne Gulmantovicz. July 23. This one day class was designed to introduce the topic to beginners. 9 members participated. While Wayne is a LVKCC member, his certification was not paid for by the club, therefore there was a fee for this class.
Canoeing. Instructor Dan Rempp (with helpers). Various dates. Club provided opportunities for the general public to paddle a canoe, many for the first time, at the Walnutport Canal Festival (Oct 15) and the Blue Mountain Fish and Game Club open house (June 17). While some basic instruction was provided, these are essentially guided self discovery, rather than formal instruction. Well over three hundred people had a canoe experience on flat water between these two events.
Recreational/Coastal Kayaking. Instructors Dan Rempp, Linda Martin and Sheldon Linn. One day sea kayaking basics taught at Lake Nockamixon on June 1. 8 members participated. One day skills development clinic taught at Mauch Chunk Lake on June 3. 6 members participated. Rescue class taught by Linda and Sheldon at Lake Nockamixon on June 22. 10 members participated.
