The club’s spring Ice Breaker Potluck dinner was a successful event held at the Triboro Sportsmen Club from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. Approximately 55 people were in attendance which included our new paddlers from the winter pool class.
At 7:15pm Linda A Martin introduced the Executive Committee. She then introduced Jeff Wartluft who gave a brief history of the club. He also had club memorabilia on display.
Linda recognized the pool class instructors, and assistants. Scott Douglas, who coordinated this year’s training program, indicated the new format seemed to work really well for the beginners. He thanked everyone who contributed ideas to the program. Completion awards were handed out to the pool class participants. A recognition award was presented to Gery Kirkner as the male paddler of the year; there was no female nomination this year. In addition to his paddling achievements, and mentoring of others, he was involved in a rescue in a challenging location that required scaling a steep ravine and carrying the injured kayakers gear back. The award was designed and created by a fellow club member, Jeff Wartluft. In accepting the award Gery spoke of the club and how it is like a family. Thank you Gery for being the person that you are; you always have a smile on your face and have a positive outlook.
No committee reports were voted on at this informal meeting. However Mary Giorlando gave an update on the success of the winter pool classes at the Upper Bucks, YMCA (Quakertown). She indicated the attendance has increased with this new location (our 2nd year there), and we actually covered the expenses of the pool rental & lifeguard costs. Several commented that there is plenty of easy access parking close to the entrance at this location, whereas at Lafayette parking is difficult to find. The pool layout also provides extra room for small groups to gather to practice.
See Website, also Facebook & Meetup sites (Lehigh Valley Kayak & Canoe Club) for current trip postings.
The next General Membership Meeting is scheduled to follow a paddle and potluck dinner on Thursday, May 4th, 2017 at the Lehigh Gap Nature Center Pavilion, Lehighton, PA.
