Join the LVKCC for a no-shuttle round-trip paddle on the tidal portion of Crosswicks Creek.
After wandering around New Jersey from its source near New Egypt, Crosswicks Creek empties into the Delaware River at Bordentown, NJ. The lower section, roughly seven miles from Groveville to Bordentown, is tidal. By timing our trip with the tides, we will ride the incoming tide up the creek and the outgoing tide back down.
The creek starts off fairly wide, meandering through tidal marshes, then narrows down, hemmed in by tree-lined banks. For more information about the marshes, take a look at https://abbottmarshlands.org/.
We will ride the tide to the Groveville area. As you see in the comments below, we will turn when we get to trees blocking the creek.
The round-trip distance is approximately 14 miles. We will have a substantial following current on the lower level of the creek in both directions. Last time up we were moving over 5 mph on the lower creek with very little paddling effort.
The only obstacle on the marsh section will be a fast current running under a railroad bridge. You must be comfortable handling your boat in a potentially strong cross current. It is not likely, but with all the recent heavy rains we may encounter a fallen tree along the tree-lined section of the creek.
We will shove off from Bordentown Beach at the foot of Park Street in Bordentown at 11:00 am, two hours before high tide. It is very critical that we catch the tide at the right time, so you must be in your boat ready to paddle at 11:00. Please plan your arrival time accordingly, but please arrive no later than 10:15!
There is ample parking and porta-potties at the launch area.
You will need your own equipment: boat, paddle, PFD with whistle. You must wear your PFD (life jacket) at all times on the water! Bring a snack and water.
This is an early fall trip so the water can be on the cool side. Please do not wear cotton clothing! A spare fleece top in a dry bag would be a good idea. No open toed shoes or flip flops.
This trip is for members of the Lehigh Valley Kayak and Canoe Club only. Not a member? Join today at http://lehighvalleycanoeclub.org/memberships.
All participants must sign a waiver.
