Education Report
The Beginners Series finished their makeup classes in Pat Beltz’s pond and the Bowmanstown eddy. There was a low turn out for each class.
The executive committee unanimously agreed to purchase a Zoom account for the club to help with teaching and remote meetings. The Zoom account was purchased for six months.
Recent Events
Scott Douglas held a guide class that was very successful. Three instructors and six students attended. The purpose of the class was to educate future trip leaders/organizers on club procedures and safety techniques.
Josh Smith held an advanced beginners class on the Upper Lehigh on July 11th. The class focused on ferries in stronger current and catching smaller eddies. The new club guidelines were clearly described on the event page.
Dan Rempp hosted a moonlight paddle on Lake Nockamixon. Eight people attended the event. After a thunderstorm passed, the paddlers were able to enjoy a relaxing, moonlit paddle.
The First Aid/CPR class scheduled for July 17th was cancelled because no one signed up for the class.
Series or Special Events
Expedition Paddling Trip
An expedition paddling trip is scheduled for August 21st-24th around the Thousand Islands. The original plan to camp on Sugar Island has been changed due to the closure of the Canadian border. Canoe Point State Park will be the new camping location. Contact Dave Dawson if you would like to attend the trip.
Sea Kayak Trip – Fall
The fall sea kayaking trip to Barnegat Bay is scheduled for October 16-19, 2020. Dates may change, depending on the restrictions in place at that time.
Larry March Slalom
An application for the slalom event was submitted to the park, and it was denied. The Allentown park system is requiring more insurance coverage for events held at their locations. The umbrella coverage needed to hold the slalom will cost $7,650. The executive officers have agreed that the club cannot afford to host the slalom event. The ACA and the Director of the Slalom Series will be notified. Without their sponsorship, the event will be cancelled.
NEW BUSINESS
Moonlight Paddle
Dan Rempp is planning a moonlight paddle at Lake Nockamixon on August 3rd.
Intermediate Class
Scott Douglas will hold an intermediate class on the Mongaup, Sunday, July 26th, if there is enough interest. Please see Meetup for trip details.
Pool Sessions
It is unclear if the Lafayette pool will be available for winter pool sessions next year. If pool sessions are not possible, the club will look into other locations for classes.
September Meeting
The next meeting will be held September 3rd at the Lehigh Gap Nature Center. Instead of a potluck, members are asked to bring their own food and beverage. A swap meet will occur in the grassy area, near the parking lot. There will be a club paddling trip on the ledges before the meeting. Details will be posted soon.
October/November Meetings
The Wildlands Conservancy is not allowing the use of their indoor meeting areas. Jerry McAward will allow the club to use the Lehighton Outdoor Center for the October and November meetings, if guidelines for social distancing, mask use, etc. are followed.
