Scott Douglas called the meeting to order at 7:08pm with a welcome to several new attendees at the meeting. Scott then introduced Larry Palmer who then provided a presentation on “Cold Water Paddler”. Larry shared kayaking related pictures, tips on preparing for a cold weather trip, safety pointers, and shared a display of his “go to” gear he relies on to paddle in the colder elements. From a high level summary he recommended the planning include knowing the water temperature, air temperature, and remaining aware of changing conditions. He further stated the importance of knowing your gear and the crew you are paddling with; not the time to introduce a new boat or new paddler. This opening presentation ended at 7:55pm.
After a brief break Scott Douglas resumed the meeting at 8:00pm.
Secretary’s Report: Tonight’s discussion revisited the prior nomination for, and voting of, the Member at Large positions as noted in the November minutes. At the November 5, 2015 meeting the nominations for Member at Large were made based on the belief that Sheldon Linn had completed his last eligible term (2 years), and Gale Maleskey was nominated as his replacement. However, upon a review of our By-laws since that meeting, the Executive Committee determined that this role is eligible for 3 consecutive one year terms. Scott Douglas clarified that the December 2015 vote was made for Sheldon Linn to continue for another term. Scott further noted that we omitted in error to vote for the other Member at Large position. Scott Douglas asked for a motion to approve the November minutes with the correction indicating the Member at Large positions as follows: Sheldon Linn, and Gale Maleskey. This motion was made by Gery Kirkner, and second by Hans Wagner.
Scott requested these changes be made to the December 2015 and January 2016 minutes to reflect the nomination and vote of Sheldon Linn and Gale Maleskey; with updated minutes to be posted to website.
Treasurer’s Report: Pat Beltz presented the January 2016 LVKCC Financial Report – Checking Account ending balance of $3,107.89, and a Savings Account ending balance of $14,173.31. A motion to approve the treasurer’s report was made by Gery Kirkner, and second by Dave Dawson.
Scott Douglas asked for member interest in obtaining more membership hats (yellow colored). The supplier had additional stock already printed which the club was able to purchase at a discounted rate of $5/ea, and resold at a profit. A motion to approve this purchase was made by Eric Schweitzer and second by Gale Maleskey.
Membership Report: Scott Douglas read a report of behalf of Dan Rempp (not present) which indicated our dues paying membership was comprised of 156 dues paying members, representing 96 families. Facebook had 744 registered viewers, and Meetup had 496; however these were not all paying members.
Webmaster’s Report: Dan Rempp indicated he plans to work on the broken website links. He paid the Meetup dues; good for 6 months.
Beginner Series: No update.
Lehigh Release Dates: Larry Palmer indicated the release dates have been posted; those interested can go to the Francis E Walter dam website for these dates.
Intermediate Series: Larry Palmer had no update on the Mongap. Scott Douglas indicated trip plans are in the works for an April/May timeframe for a river guide class. He also indicated a St Patty’s weekend “Toh” release is planned; not for beginners. He also expects have 1 Lower Yough trip.
Youth Program: Scott Douglas indicated on June 18th the Blue Mountain Fish & Game Association will again run their youth program; including the promotion of canoe safety. Pat Beltz shared her positive experience volunteering at last year’s event. Volunteers are again needed this year. Pat indicated she will coordinate the volunteers needed.
Flat Water/Recreational Trips: Scott Douglas reported that Dan Rempp will do another Skill Development session; possibly end of May/beginning of June. Dan will post the recreational trips to the website.
Pool Sessions: Linda Martin gave an update report. There were 7 people signed up for the Moving Water class, and 6 for the Recreational class. She indicated they need to correct dates printed in a letter that went out to the participants. Scott Douglas reminded all to clean out their boats prior to going to the pool sessions.
Rolling Class: Scott Douglas asked if there was any interest in doing another outdoor rolling class at a lake. Several attendees expressed interest in attending. Discussion ensued on the experience from last year’s skills development class at Lake Nockamixon involving the Park Ranger. The ranger indicated that our club needed to register our organized events at the park; such as the training class. Scott indicated he will check on the policy with the park.
Ice Breaker: Lisa Aderhold indicated the Ice Breaker date is set for Friday, April 8th at starting at 6pm at Triboro Sportsmen Club, in Cementon (same location as last year). On a recommendation discussed at the Executive Committee meeting in January, this event will be another pot-luck meal rather than a catered event.
Paddler of the Year Award: Scott Douglas asked everyone to submit their recommendations to him for the male and female paddler of the year. He had 4 nominations so far. All input to be received before the March membership meeting.
Sea Kayak Trip: Linda Martin gave an update on the schedule trip. Location: near Chester, MD. Date: May 20th through May 24. Deposit of $30/ required. The cost of the trip will include lodging ($30/night), and food. The building can house 36 people; 16 people already confirmed. Plans are in progress; including a paddle by the Eastern Neck Reserve.
