We are very fortunate today to live near some beautiful rivers and lakes. The water is clear and clean. The shores are covered in verdant forests and wildlife is everywhere we care to look. But that was not always the case here in Pennsylvania. At the turn of the century cities like Harrisburg, Pittsburg, and yes, Allentown and Bethlehem were often dirty, squalled places with no parks or playgrounds or public pools. Filthy rivers and lakes, and denuded hillsides were the norm. What changed and how did it change? Who were the people that made the difference? What motivated them? Can we learn from there heroic efforts?
