This is an open water paddle, along the southern portion of Raritan bay. This is a great introduction to open water paddling for those interested in exploring this type of kayaking. There are only two minor boat channels to contend with, and the bulk of our paddling is in water that is infrequently used by motor boats. Along the way, information about navigation, boat handling in these types of conditions, and other general information will be discussed. At Keyport, there is a beach where we will stop for lunch before heading back. The total trip is about 10 miles.

Kayaks should be no less than 14 feet and spray skirts, a proper paddle, and pfd’s are required. While prior open water experience is not needed, you should have a good command of general paddling strokes, have knowledge of boat rescues, and have done a wet exit with a skirt on. Additionally, proper dress for the water temperature and weather conditions, adequate hydration, snacks and lunch, hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.

We will meet at 9:00 and plan to launch by 9:30. We launch from South Amboy Beach, Raritan Reach Rd, South Amboy, NJ 08879.
