Come enjoy a weekend of camping and paddling in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey! This is a repeat of the trip we did last year. The Pine Barrens are like nothing in our area: gentle but twisty narrow rivers through sandy forests. You can bring a rec kayak, white water kayak or canoe for this trip. The rivers flow slowly, but you need to be comfortable turning your boat—these rivers are nothing but turns! Our plan is to paddle the Wading and Batsto Rivers, although we may have to switch to other rivers in the area depending upon water levels at that time. This is a club trip - you must be an LVKCC member to register and attend. We are camping at the Wharton State Forest campground on Atsion Lake, 31 Batsto Rd, Hammonton NJ. Cost for two nights is $55, or $45 for NJ residents. Go to the park web site at https://www.njportal.com/DEP/NJOutdoors/Park/Details?locationId=19 to reserve a site. Enter the dates and site type, then scroll within the Map View to Atsion Family Campground. Click an available site, then click the Review Selection button. There are other area camping options if this camp doesn’t work for you. Cost: in addition to your camping reservation, expect a charge of around $40 for shuttling for one of the days, with Pinelands Adventures outfitter. We’ll provide more details, and the link for the online outfitter waiver, closer to the event. We may also choose to go out for dinner Saturday evening as a group. Friday evening: sunset paddle on Atsion Lake Saturday: paddling on Wading River Sunday: group breakfast in camp; paddling on Batsto River Get your campsite early, and sign up soon on the club website so we know how many people will be going. Contact Mark Bereit (campsite #9) with any questions.

Let’s take a 6 mile leisurely paddle on the Lehigh River leg of the reservoir. Will meet at the Francis Walter kayak launch for a 10:30 AM start. The formal kayak launch is on the west side of the dam. Will paddle all the way to where The Lehigh River enters the reservoir. Bring water and a snack. Must be a member of the LVKCC. PFD’s must be worn while on the water. Thunderstorms or high winds will cancel. Boat launch stickers are not required. Contact Gary Leander gleander@ptd.net if you have any questions. Please register for this event on the club website.

Assisted rescues are important in our sport. Being able to assist a fellow paddler back into their boat may make the difference between a good day and a very bad day. This free clinic is for recreational, touring and sea kayakers. If you have a recreational kayak, you will need to have float bags in the bow and the stern if you do not have bulkheads. Touring and sea kayaks usually have bulkheads. Check to see that they are in good condition. Make sure all hatches are water tight. You will be spending time in the water. A wet suit is recommended. Neoprene booties are also recommended. Please, no cotton clothing! Make sure your boat has an up to date launch permit. This clinic will be run by ACA certified instructors Dan Rempp and Mike Miller. Enrollment is limited to 5 paddlers.

I am organizing three trips on the Lower Yough, from Friday, July 4 to Sunday, July 6. The trip on July 4 will meet at 1:00 p.m., to allow people to drive out and the trips on July 5 and 6 will meet at 9:00 a.m. If you want to join for any of the trips, please sign up but email me to confirm which of the three trips you will join (all, two, or just one). The Lower Yough is a solid Class III river, so you need to be comfortable with boat control, hitting eddys, and making ferries on the Upper Lehigh (White Haven to Rockport) and/or Lower Lehigh (Rockport to Glen Onoko). You do not need to have paddle the Lower Yough or have a roll to join this trip, however I need to be practical about how many new boaters I could manage on each trip. If I don‘t think that I have paddled with you, I will contact you about your skill level. Please be prepared to tell me what whitewater boat you paddle, where you have paddled, and how those trips went. There will be a cost of $10 for the trips on Saturday and Sunday, payable in cash to the DCNR, for the launch permit and shuttle. Each person will be responsible for their accommodations, most likely camping, but I will try to coordinate to see if we can find a common location. Questions: Contact Josh Smith by email.
