This summer, join us for a weekend of camping and paddling in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. The Pine Barrens are like nothing in our area: gentle but twisty narrow rivers through sandy forests.
You can bring a rec kayak, white water kayak or canoe for this trip. The rivers flow slowly, but you need to be comfortable turning your boat—these rivers are nothing but turns! Our plan is to paddle the Wading and Batsto Rivers, although we may have to switch to other rivers in the area depending upon water levels at that time.
This is a club trip - you must be an LVKCC member to register and attend.
We are camping at the Wharton State Forest campground on Atsion Lake, 31 Batsto Rd, Hammonton NJ. Cost for two nights is $55, or $45 for NJ residents. Go to the park web site at https://www.njportal.com/DEP/NJOutdoors/Park/Details?locationId=19 to reserve a site. Enter the dates and site type, then scroll within the Map View to Atsion Family Campground. Click an available site, then click the Review Selection button. (There are other area camping options if this camp doesn’t work for you.)
Cost: in addition to your camping reservation, expect a charge of around $30 for shuttling for one of the days, with Pinelands Adventures outfitter. We’ll provide more details, and the link for the online outfitter waiver, closer to the event. We may also choose to go out for dinner Saturday evening as a group.
Get your campsite early, and sign up soon so we know how many people will be going. Contact Mark Bereit (campsite #20) with any questions.
Rolling in Moving Water – Many paddlers have experienced the loss of their roll when they flip in moving water. Learn how to overcome this problem with a series of simple drills that will have you combat rolling reliably. This is NOT a rolling class, it’s for those who simply lose their roll when they need it most. Plan on a full day. July 27 from 9-4 at Dunbar’s. Email Scott Douglas for more information
